The Task
Mini-wafers Ренуа is a product line by the big Russian company Sladonyezh. For this project we were asked to design the trademark Ренуа and the product packaging. Our client's idea was very interesting and inspiring - the French artist Renoir's name had to be written in Cyrillic, and this already gave us a starting point for work on the entire packaging. We had to immerse ourselves in the 19th century atmosphere, to study the specifics of impressionist painting, and to crate three packaging designs for wafers, which would carry the spirit of the age and bear the characteristics of Renoir's paintings, and yet at the same time be unique works by Ренуа - artwork created entirely by us.

The Solution
The assignment was to create three different paintings for the three packaging designs, which would mimic the masking and hatching characteristic of 19th century impressionists. But when we immersed ourselves in researching and practising the style, we found the front of the packaging to be insufficient in terms of space. The paintings were coming out alright (you can see a detailed guide through the work here) but there was something missing. Impressionism is about inspiration from a single moment which has left a trace deep in the memory and heart of the artist. A beautiful woman, a gorgeous view ... a lasting impression. This was missing and we suggested using the back of the packaging to develop the idea fully. We wanted to tell the story which inspired the painting on the front. To do this we added a text next to the artist's sketch describing this moment. This is how the Sketches by Ренуа and the diary entries about his travels and experiences were born. Thus, Ренуа, the artist, travels across France, painting the scenery and portraits of people met along the way. His paintings and drawings reflect the times - the second half of the 19th century - industrial progress, scientific discoveries, great French literature, Flaubert, Maupassant. All of this intertwines with the image of a woman he often sees at the spots where he draws throughout his life, but never gets to meet ... the beautiful stranger.

May 2, 1883 - the suburbs of Argenteuil

It's the first time I leave the stifling airs of Paris ... I'm rowing. A ray of May sunlight shines over me ... The newly-arrived spring energies engulf me. The joyous grasshopper song obscures Seine's murmur. An intoxicating breath of fresh air. The sun and the green ... Oh, yes! It´s really green! I heard her voice: "What a beautiful day!"

August 26, 1882 - Pourville resort

The peaceful wild shores of Pourville. It's a strange time - I want to combine the constant changes of color and mood so that I can capture the weightless transition between summer and autumn on the canvas. The finishing touch is the contrast between nature's calm and the fleeting image of the beautiful stranger. Their first meeting provoked by a decisive gust of wind that carries away her hat. A contrast between emotions.

September 15, 1883 - port Havre

The sun rises from the sea. My goal is to paint the impression the view leaves me with ... The scene is secondary ... A mere sketch. The brush strokes and the manner in which paint spreads on paper are capable of recreating every spark of the sun ... Their union ... Their confession.
