The task

Our client, Gourmet Food Imports, imports food products from the Balkans to the U.S.A. One of the signature dishes the region is famous with across the Atlantic is the banitsa pastry.
This project entailed creating packaging designs for a product line of differently shaped banitsas with various kinds of filling. The product was marketed as traditional Greek spanakopita for marketing purposes.

We decided to make retouched photos of the spanakopita the focus of our designs. We found that a photo which had not been retouched had some unappealing aspects - the cracks in the uppermost crust, bends in the rows, and burns - all results of baking the pastry. Our task was both to photograph the products and retouch the photos. After a few photoshoots and trying various retouching methods, we completed some very appealing images of the spanakopita.

 

Our client would sell this product with the Ikaros trademark, which was already known on the market. After careful observation, we confirmed that this trademark needed to be redesigned for aesthetic and technical reasons.

 

The Result

We mainly used blue and white in the designs. These, coupled with the yellow in the background, created a pleasant Mediterranean atmosphere. The Balkans are known in America through the import of Greek products, therefore, the colors used and the design as a whole had to remind the customer of this region.

The result was a series of packaging designs for this delicious product, typical of our homeland. We are happy it now has its share of fans as far away as in the U.S.A.
