Slavyanskiy Iztochnik
TO PORTFOLIO
The task was to design a label for a brand of mineral water which only came in 19 l bottles. Okololuga is a company which sells mineral water under several famous brand names, but this one was meant to come in large bottles for use both at home and at the office.
We are Slavs and so this project presented a challenge for us, because we had to create an authentic and symbolic design.
Work on this project involved analyzing the packaging designs of similar products. We wanted to steer away from clichés which had little to do with the brand name. We wanted to create a design which told a story. We didn't think a minimalist or monochrome design would suit the project needs. Quite the opposite - we wanted to create a vibrant image teeming with distinct meanings, which would fully convey the product's "Slavic origins", and the entire illustration would reflect the essence of the project - water.
The logo was designed so that the letters would mimic the structure of water - fluid, round, and soft. Of course the Slavic way of life is anchored to faith, which is why the logo included a church as a focal point - it occupies a central place, yet it is discrete.
We constructed a traditional Russian scene with its own characters, one of which, a beautiful, typically Russian woman in traditional wear, stood out more, and a smaller group of Russian women in similar garments stood on the opposite bank for balance.
A character illustration is always a plus for packaging design, as they "come to life" on the shelf and naturally draw attention. We added bright colorful elements in the women's hair to make the label stand out amidst the typical blue monochrome labels on the market.
The result was a very successful project, which received a lot of positive consumer reviews.
