The task

This project included over 60 different packaging designs for four distinct product lines. When in the spices section customers tend to choose the products with traditional packaging designs, meaning those with an attractive and unambiguous product photo or illustration. Our biggest advantage when working on this type of project is retouching, which was essential for this particular job. Retouching allows "extracting" everything from the photo. We exaggerate every part of the collage and add black light to highlight each object in the composition, and so create extra volume and texture.

 
the solution

When they turned to us, our client, the Đšolvi company, already had a basic design, which was long recognized on the market. Our task was to redesign some elements and create more intricate product illustrations. We had to re-do the existing SKU from the product line and create our own brand new ones.

We had also been assigned the task of creating a new line of "etno-spices" bearing the name Pripravy Mira, which necessitated an additional set of graphic illustrations - the most well-known landmarks from the homeland of each spice. Our technique involved making use of metallic foil paper - we left a number of the design elements without a white background and in a particular color, thus adding more shine to the design.

Redesigning

Firstly, we modernized the existing product illustrations. On one hand, we made it so it could still be recognized by consumers, on the other - we changed the blurry images and made the old design, our starting point, a great deal more vibrant.

Redesigning

After redesigning and meticulous retouching, the packaging designs for Indana spices became much less ambiguous and much more aesthetically pleasing.

The goal of restyling and retouching is to make visual communication possible from a meter or meter and a half away from the shelf - the distance at which packaging designs are taken in. This is achieved by outlining each element in the photograph and so distinguishing it from the rest. In the example image Pilaf you can clearly see the distinction between the pieces of meat and vegetables and the rice, accomplished by retouching each grain individually. This is how the image is registered as an appetizing dish, rather than a formless substance, from the aforementioned distance.

The product line was divided into several subtypes based on the kind of spices included and these subtypes can be differentiated by the color of the packaging.

The "black" line included spices with different kinds of pepper and additives, as well as barbeque spices.

All of the spices intended for particular recipes were included in the "orange" line.
