Challenge
KORPORATSIYA UDACHI is a very special client of ours. We've done a lot of projects for them and our collaborative work always led to very good results.
The task for their line of Fortune Cookies turned out to pose a real challenge. The client's idea was that the packaging should show a retro-circus and that the design should be done in the style of a poster from the 19th c. However, we should have avoided using clichés such as clowns, balloons and acrobats, as they would have made the packaging childish. The design had to look serious enough to make the product a suitable gift. Not only should it have shown a circus, but it also had to convey a magical moment, a mystery, a transformation. This is why the cookie is not static, but is drawn being opened and revealing the fortune inside.
After doing our research, we realized that there were no products employing a similar marketing strategy, which gave us complete freedom, as we didn't have to take competing products into account.
We created two sides for the design we used as a model later on - both of them were also two sides of a story. One side represents the stage with a principal character, the Fortune Cookie, as a central element. We added typical circus adornments, such as curtains and stripes, which would immerse the viewer in the atmosphere and highlight the splendor of the performance. This in turn gave the packaging a more serious look as well. We added acrobats and wrote the brand name on the roof of a tent, which we placed at the top - its natural place in a composition. We decided to use raster graphic images for this project as our goal was to create a presentable, elegant appearance suitable for a gift. We added a touch of magic and mysticism to the background, as every cookie conceals a unique prediction of the future.
We used an illustration of an elephant on the other side because elephants are both circus animals and symbols of good fortune. Here, we show a close-up of the cookie once again, this time from a different angle in order to avoid making the design repetitive. This also made the product stand out from every side of the packaging. Our client sent us samples of the product, which proved to be of great help, as we could take our own photos. This was an advantage for us because we were able to use the photographs to realize our vision, rather than tailor the project to suit whatever images were available.
This product is sold in an array of packaging types and sizes. The design had to suit all of them, so that it would be clear they belonged to the same product line. We had to design wrappers for individual cookies, a counter display for them, a pyramid-shaped pack, and a larger square box. Despite having to work with packaging in such different shapes and sizes, we managed to create matching designs for the whole product line, which pleased customers and now sell the fortune cookies well.
